Ember & Ash

Directed by Dorian Bell

A blacksmith's apprentice who can hear metal remember its dead must reforge a crown that everyone else wants melted down.

In the ash-fall city of Cinderhold, every blade carries the memory of the hand that swung it, and only Rook can hear them. When the shattered crown of a fallen queen is brought to the forge to be melted into coin, Rook hears it beg to be whole again. Reforging it would crown a rebellion; melting it would end one. With warlords at the gate and the metal whispering the truth of who really killed the queen, Rook must decide what the fire is for.

The Screenplay

1

INT. CINDERHOLD FORGE - NIGHT

Ash drifts through the rafters. Rook lays the crown's shattered pieces on the anvil. The moment her palm touches gold, a voice rings through the metal.

THE CROWN

You can hear me. Good. They told the wrong story about the night I broke.

ROOK

Crowns don't talk. Metal doesn't lie either. Pick one.

2

INT. FORGE - WARDEN'S VISIT - CONTINUOUS

Warden Aldous sweeps in with two guards, eyeing the glowing shards. He sets a heavy purse on the anvil.

WARDEN ALDOUS

Melt it into coin by dawn. A crown is only dangerous while it's shaped like one.

ROOK

And a witness is only dangerous while it can still speak.

3

INT. FORGE - THE REFORGING - DAWN

Fire roars. Rook holds the mold over the crucible, the crown's memory pouring truth into her ears while the warlords' horns sound outside the walls.

ROOK

If I make you whole, they'll fight over you. If I let you melt, they win by forgetting.

THE CROWN

Then don't make a crown, blacksmith. Make a verdict.
