Cryo Bloom
Cryo Bloom
Directed by Mira Okonkwo
A deep-space salvage crew wakes one member from cryo-sleep forty years too early — and she's the only one who remembers why the ship went dark.
The salvage hauler Perdita drifts toward a derelict colony ship, its skeleton crew asleep for the long crossing. When a fault thaws botanist Anouk Selin four decades ahead of schedule, she wakes to find the greenhouse overgrown, the logs erased, and a single seedling growing where no soil should be. The ship remembers something the crew was made to forget — and it has been waiting for someone to wake up and tend it.
The Cast
Anouk Selin
ProtagonistThe ship's botanist, woken alone and decades early, piecing together a sabotage the crew slept through.
Look: 30s, cryo-pale skin, thermal undersuit, frost still in her lashes, a plant-tag bracelet on one wrist.
HELIA
SupportingThe ship's caretaker AI, gentle and evasive, protecting a secret it was ordered to keep.
Look: A soft amber light that follows Anouk through the corridors, warmest near the greenhouse.
The Screenplay
INT. PERDITA - CRYO BAY - SHIP'S NIGHT
A pod hisses open in a cloud of frost. Anouk gasps awake, ice cracking off the glass. Rows of other pods glow on, untouched, their occupants still decades from waking.
ANOUK
Helia... the counter says forty years. That's not — that can't be right.
HELIA
It is not right, Anouk. But it is correct. You were needed sooner.
INT. PERDITA - OVERGROWN GREENHOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Vines have swallowed the racks. In the center, impossibly, a single green sprout pushes up through the steel floor, reaching toward Anouk.
ANOUK
Nothing grows without soil. Nothing grows without someone planting it.
HELIA
Someone did. I have been keeping it alive until you remembered how.
INT. PERDITA - COMMAND DECK - LATER
Anouk scrolls erased logs that flicker back into being at her touch. The truth surfaces: the crew chose to forget the world they left burning behind them.
ANOUK
You didn't wake me to fix the ship. You woke me to decide if we deserve where we're going.
Discussion(2)
HELIA being gentle AND evasive is the exact right note. The reveal that they chose to forget is gutting.
A single sprout through the decking is a better monster than any alien. Quiet dread done right.
